Bangladesh Enacts 80 Percent Increase in Jet Fuel Prices
The Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) attributed the sharp hike to turbulence in global fuel markets driven by the ongoing Middle East conflict.
“We had to adjust the jet fuel price for the second time this month, considering the international fuel price rate which has shot up,” BERC Chairman Jalal Ahmed was quoted by AFP as saying.
Under the revised structure, jet fuel for international routes is now priced at $1.32 per litre. The updated rates, effective from midnight Tuesday, apply to both domestic and foreign airlines, with variations based on operational classifications.
This is not the first attempt to raise prices this month. Earlier in March, BERC approved a similar increase, but the move was quickly halted within hours after an emergency reassessment.
On Wednesday, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman convened a high-level meeting to map out responses to mounting fuel pressures linked to rising global oil costs, according to local media.
The impact of supply disruptions has rippled across South Asia. In Pakistan, authorities have held petrol and high-speed diesel prices steady, though aviation fuel and kerosene costs have risen quietly, Dawn reported. Meanwhile, India and Nepal have not altered jet fuel rates.
Bangladesh remains heavily dependent on imported energy, sourcing roughly 95% of its needs for a population of 175 million. As part of a bilateral agreement, India is set to deliver 180,000 tonnes of diesel annually via pipeline.
Earlier this month, a senior Bangladeshi official said 5,000 tonnes of diesel would be supplied through the Parbatipur border under the same arrangement.
Separately, Dhaka is preparing to launch its first nuclear power facility. The Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant—constructed with Russian support—is expected to bring its first unit online in early April. Officials project the plant will contribute 1,200 megawatts of electricity to the national grid by year’s end.
